Nissan Motor Hiking Wages At US Auto Plants After UAW Deal
?Nissan Motor (7201.T) will hike top wages for workers at U.S. manufacturing plants by 10% in January after the United Auto Workers union reached new contracts with the Detroit Three automakers, a company spokesperson said on Monday.? ? Reuters.
The Japanese automaker had said that the hike in wages would be effective from January 8th for the production technicians, tool and die technicians, and maintenance. The workers who are not yet on the top scale shall also get an increase in wages. Approximately 9,000 US workers, on the whole, will get hikes in their pay.
Nissan had said that it would also be eliminating their wage ties for the production workers in the United States. In the recent weeks, Toyota Motor, Hyundai Motor, and Honda Motor have all made announcements that they would want to hike the wages in the US factories after the UAW contract as the union has been saying that it will be working to organize the non-union plants operated by the foreign automakers along with Tesla.
Nissan had said that the pay hikes are a reflection of their commitment to the employees in the United States “and enhancing our competitiveness.”
The UAW labor deals with Ford Motor, General Motor, and Stellantis, which a 25% increase in the base wages by 2028, which includes an immediate 11% hike, and will cumulatively increase the upper wage by 33%, compounded with an projected cost of living adjustments to more than $42 per hour.
It also cuts the number of years that are needed to reach the top to pay from eight to three years, boosting the pay of the temporary workers by 150% and making them permanent employees. The deal would also include major retirement improvements. Nissan had said that over the previous three years, it had increased its wages at three of its manufacturing sites by 12-18.5% in total.
